Apartment Renovation Private Floor Area: 72.10 m²

This renovation of an apartment in an approximately 20-year-old building in Fudomae, Tokyo, explores how a compact home can offer varied places to inhabit and a distinct spatial rhythm. Alongside changes in materials, differences in floor height and a large pivot door shape the living space in three dimensions.

Three levels—the main floor, a raised platform, and a loft—create distinct experiences within one continuous interior. Shifts in posture and eye level, whether standing, sitting, or lying down, bring different perceptions of openness and distance within the same space. These changes in height gently define individual areas while preserving the continuity of the whole.

A large pivot door mediates these connections. Rotating a single plane allows the interior to shift between openness and separation, altering sightlines and the relationships between places within the home. “Layers” formed by height and a “turn” introduced by the door: together, these two gestures create a choice of places for different moments of everyday life within a largely open-plan interior, exploring a richness of living that extends beyond the measure of floor area.
